Working with HM Revenue and Customs, officers intercepted a large quantity of what is believed to be steroids at the gym in Dowlais over the weekend.
An officer at Merthyr Police Station confirmed that while the gym could not be named, the drugs were seized from a privately-run bodybuilding gym.
The suspected steroids, a Class C drug, were discovered in small bottles as well as tablet form.
Steroids increase protein synthesis in the body’s cells, which can result in the build-up of muscles.
In a statement, Merthyr Tydfil Chief Inspector Ian Bellshaw said: “We are delighted to have worked successfully with HM Revenue and Customs to intercept a large quantity of steroids with a significant value.
“Steroids are a Class C controlled drug, available on prescription only.
“Any other method of obtaining them is illegal and we will continue to work with our partner agencies to carry out further operations of this kind.”
An arrest has been made in connection with the case but no charges had been brought at the time of going to press, as enquiries are still ongoing.
